  Behavior Modification Planning
A practical training guide for school counselors

[back]

Students with disruptive behaviors populate our schools. Learn how to modify their behavior through developing Behavior Modification Plans!!

You want me to do what??
Give me a break!!

This training has been enthusiastically received by school counselors, social workers, examiners and others who have found themselves dealing with troubled students. It guides participants through the process of recognizing the underlying causes of behavior disorders, developing a plan to effect behavioral changes and provides practical application of the completed behavior modification plan.

Introduction

  • The need for diagnostic knowledge

The process of educating today’s student is becoming more complex. The only solution is a team approach.

  • The need for behavior planning

A behavior plan, with all parties participating, will serve to keep everyone focused on a specific goal and will greatly improve the probability of making a change.

Disorders Commonly Seen in School

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: ADHD

ADHD often appears with other conditions and can complicate diagnosis and behavior planning.

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder: ODD

ODD that is not dealt with can progress to Conduct Disorder and even more serious disorders.

  • Anxiety Disorders

If not addressed, these disorders can cause a student not to reach full potential, drop out of school and at the extreme, can give rise to life threatening concerns.

Diagnostic Information

It is essential in developing behavior plans that the correct diagnosis has been applied. This training is a review of DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition) diagnostic procedures and requirements.

  • Axis I   -  Clinical disorders
  • Axis II  -  Personality disorders
  • Axis III -  General Medical Condition
  • Axis IV -  Psychosocial and Environmental Problems
  • Axis V  -  Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF)

Behavior Planning

  • General Rules
    1. Identify the Underlying Problem
    2. Identify the Student’s Key Motivator
    3. Target a Specific Behavior
    4. Involve the student, parent, teacher, therapist and others
    5. Write it (Don't stress this one...just a one pager.  We know how over-worked and under paid you are.)
    6. Specify consequences
    7. Use contracts (We have some FREE cute ones.)
  • Examples

The training will provide concrete examples of students with behavior problems and the behavior plans used to correct those problems.

Exercise: Case Notes
