mass school shootings in recent years.
"A male teacher was shot in the face and was
killed by a student," said a spokesperson for the school
district, Mabel Cardec.
She said the student pulled out a gun and shot the
teacher in the face at Lake Worth Middle School north of West Palm
Beach. It was not clear if he was a student in that class or entered
the room from outside.
The student fled, but was caught on school grounds
and detained. Nobody else was hurt in the incident at the middle
school, which teaches children aged from 11 to 15.
Cardec said the children were just waiting for the
bell to ring at the end of classes when the shooting occurred at about
3.30 p.m.
“It’s time to stop acting like this is a backwater town and put
the schools’ security in the hands of professionals,” attorney Bob
Montgomery told The Palm Beach Post.
The incident was bound to renew anxiety among
parents and children in America, shocked by a series of mass
shootings. The worst incident was in April last year in Littleton,
Colorado, when two students rampaged through Columbine High School,
killing 13 people before taking their own lives.
Police have now revealed their findings as they released tapes of
the 911 call made when Lake Worth Middle School teacher Barry Grunow
was fatally shot Friday by 13-year-old Nathaniel Brazill. The
seventh-grade honor student, who was sent home from school for
throwing water balloons in a hallway, allegedly returned later and
fired one shot from a small gun, killing the 35-year-old teacher. One
