Note: Not all trainings are listed on Calendar
January 20, 2003 - Pearcy, Arkansas In-Service Sponsored by:
Lake Hamilton High School:
Contact Person-Paula McRae This is an abbreviated version of our "Assessment Training of the Potentially Dangerous Student." It is intended as a follow-on training for the school staff in implementing the procedures covered in the full training. The model is for the school district to develop an assessment team concept, consisting of 3 or 4 people in each school who are trained in the use of the Keys To Safer Schools.com "Assessment Tool" and referral procedures. This provides a core of people who can take the observations of Early Warning Signs provided by teachers and others and process them into an action plan for the student. We are prepared to provide the in-service without the Assessment training, however, it may leave a gap as to what the teachers are expected to do with their new found knowledge. If the school already has a plan, we will incorporate it into the training.

Request Acceptance into training. This is the most essential training available to schools and youth workers today. With the ever increasing frequency of school shootings, it is time that we do something about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why" we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and "How" to provide help for them. There is an emphasis on identification, assessment and training of early and imminent warning signs of the PDS. This training provides schools a component of the Risk Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and information, this training will produce Certification and a Train-the-Trainer Model for instituting/using the Keys To Safe Schools.com Assessment Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification of the Potentially Dangerous Students.

Break out Sessions
Recognizing the Potentially Dangerous Student We will briefly discuss a model approach to developing an Risk Assessment Response Team as covered in the Columbine Report. Although, we will spend the great part of the session looking briefly at Early and Imminent Warning Signs which was brought out in the FBI, Department of Ed and other national studies. This session will look at these three sub-topics:
This is a listing of signs and traits demonstrated by perpetrators of past violent acts. It also includes cautions about misunderstanding and misapplication of the signs and possible harm that can come from doing so. This topic looks at preventative interventions that can be taken with students who display Early Warning Signs. It emphasizes the need to take action while being careful not to label students.
