1. Train-the-Trainers: Certification in Assessing the PDS - https://keystosaferschools.com/Train-the-Trainer_PDS.htm

Time is growing short for pre-registration for the this training in St. Augustine. Response has been tremendous but there are still some openings left at the Early-Registration cost of just $225 if you complete the registration process by January 6, 2003. After that date you can still register, space permitting, at the regular cost of $260.

This is the training that you have asked for and have been waiting to attend. Previously, Keys staff were the only trainers who could Train and Certify anyone in Assessing the Potentially Dangerous Student, but due to the increasing demand and the need to reduce costs within a district/organization Keys is making this shift. The size of this class will be kept small so apply to attend early. If you accept our offer to become a Trainer in this program, which features our Nationally used and highly unique Assessment Instrument, you will be one of the first. School Districts/Organizations across the USA have participated in this PDS training and paid for every staff member there. This training will allow your district/organization to train you who can then train and certify your entire Assessment Team without additional training cost. The cost for this train-the-trainers event that will be held February 6 & 7, 2003 in St. Augustine, Fl is only $225.

Added Bonus: This training may make you eligible to become a Trainer in the Keys Associate Program and help us to reach others all over the county who need help assessing their Potentially Dangerous Students (PDS). For more information or to apply, go to: https://keystosaferschools.com/Train-the-Trainer_PDS.htm

2. 13 year old found dead - https://keystosaferschools.com/Internet_safety.htm

A 13 year old female student in Arkansas was found dead after 2 days of searching.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to this young lady's family. The student met her alleged abductor and killer in a chat room on the internet. We at Keys cannot emphasize enough the importance of parental and school control over student activity on the internet. Last year, a 14 year old was referred for counseling after his grades dropped off and he had become very oppositional. Both parents were amazed when it was suggested that giving him a private room, with a private phone line and unsupervised access to the internet was part of the problem. Privacy can be a dangerous thing for adolescents who believe they are grown-up but lack the maturity for sound judgment. 3. Safety Survey - https://keystosaferschools.com/WorkshopsPg2.htm#SCHOOL_SAFETY_SITE_ASSESSMENT

Keys recently conducted a Safety Survey at one of the most secure schools ever visited. The result was over 20 pages of possible security issues. Even in the most secure of places, there are lapses that we all see and walk past everyday.

The problem is that most of us are too familiar with our own facility and tend to ignore the things that criminals, terrorists, vandals and at times our own students would find inviting. Keys To Safer Schools.com offers a School Safety Site Survey that will provide a view of your facility from a professional, third-party perspective, with the limited budget of public and private schools in mind. The Survey will provide a confidential written report of vulnerabilities that can then be addressed. To find out if your school can be a safer place to learn, contact us by email or phone 1-800-504-7355. Even your inquiry will be held in confidence.

6. Keys in the News

Keys has been featured in several news venues this summer. Live interviews were conducted by Kansas State University , Morehead State Public Radio and others. Fox News featured Keys To Safer Schools.com and the Conference on the Potentially Dangerous Student in Orlando, Florida. The Arkansas Democrat/Gazette, the state's largest newspaper, wrote a very favorable article about the training done by Keys for the staff and faculty of the Arkansas School for the Deaf. Kansas Public Radio conducted an off-air interview and obtained a great deal of information over the internet from Keys for an up-coming program on Behavior Modification in public schools. Keys was contacted by the BBC London Office for an on-air interview after the sentencing of the Santana High School shooter about role of consequences in keeping our schools safer. For more information go to our website.

Several of our Associates and friends have reported news about Keys in their local or other national media. If you spot a story about Keys or one that mentions Keys, please send it to us or tell us.

7. Bullying Training -    https://keystosaferschools.com/BullyingStopswhenRespectBegins.htm

Did you know that Bullying is perhaps the single most common element in school violence events? Report after report lists up to 75% of all students as current or former victims of bullying. Increasingly, we are seeing bullying at school not limited to the students. The central training in Keys bullying program is "Bullying Stops when Respect Begins." This is a program based on the concept that if bully, victim, parents and school personnel learn to respect themselves and others, bullying will simply stop. Keys trainers have presented this program to a number of schools who report success with it. More recently, Keys has introduced Training-the-Trainers for this program and has help schools to set up a comprehensive program involving a campaign to raise awareness followed by a year round program of internal instruction and activities. 8. Tip of the Month: How to Search for a Weapon

  1. Don't. Without law enforcement training of disarming a suspect, you will place yourself or others at risk.
  2. Report any suspected weapons to your SRO (School Resource Officer) or local police.
  3. Intervene (if untrained) only when there is a direct and imminent threat to self or others.

10. Tip of the Month: Responding to a Bomb Threat with a Passive Search

The bomb threat caller is the best source of information about the bomb. Utilizing an approved checklist which is by all phones is the best way to remember what was said.   When a bomb threat is called in:

  1. Keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Ask him/her to repeat the message. Record every word spoken by the person on an approved checklist.

  2. If the caller does not indicate the location of the bomb or the time of possible detonation, ask him/her for this information.

  3. Ask caller for his/her name (at times they will accidentally give it to you.)  Then check caller ID (if not in place, obtain it!)

  4. Inform the caller that the building is occupied and the detonation of a bomb could result in death or serious injury to many innocent people.

  5. Pay particular attention to background noises, such as motors running, music playing, and any other noise which may give a clue as to the location of the caller.

  6. Listen closely to the voice (male, female), voice quality (calm, excited), accents, and speech impediments. Immediately after the caller hangs up, report the threat to the person designated by management to receive such information .

  7. Report the information immediately to the police department, fire department, ATF, FBI, and other appropriate agencies. Normally, one call to 911 will effect all of these. The sequence of notification should be established in the bomb incident plan.

  8. Remain available, as law enforcement personnel will want to interview you.

If the bomb threat is written, avoid any unnecessary handling of the note or letter including the envelope. Report it as in #6 above.
