2. Terrorism Update:
Explosives and Weapons were Pre-positioned in the School!

Picture of Student that was held hostage in Beslan School.Russian president Vladimir Putin reported that they have identified some of the terrorists at Beslan School as linked to al-Qaeda and international terrorism.  He said that, the group was allegedly financed by al-Qaeda with money from Saudi Arabia. Reports now indicate that they had been entering the school undetected and stockpiling the weapons and explosives that were used to kill so many students, staff and parents - for weeks.

Keys To Safer Schools.com has conducted School Site Safety Surveys across the country to help schools identify vulnerabilities. Without exception, Keys staffers have been able to enter and place "mock devices" inside these schools with the entry and the mack package going undetected. If you are concerned about your school being vulnerable to terrorist activity, please bring in a team of experts to find your weaknesses and suggest solutions. To read a full article on this subject, go to: Who is in Your School?

Lock Out Violence Everyday with Keys To Safer Schools.com

Saturday, September 4, Coach Mars was in Kiona-Benton City Middle School returning game films to his office when he was attacked by two students, 14 and 16 years old. The Coach died and both boys will be tried as adults. When arrested, one boy was sporting a new tattoo which indicated that the killing had served as a promotion for him within his gang.

Internet safety

Do you know what chat room your child/teen is in?

The Internet, as the Interstate Highway, is a wonderful tool when used properly but very dangerous when used carelessly. But it can turn deadly.

A 13 year-old female student met her alleged abductor and killer in a chat room on the internet.

10. Tip of the Month for Teachers:  Recognizing the Cycle of Violence and breaking that cycle

Cycle of ViolenceSchool violence can happen any where.  School Year 2003-2004 was one of the most violent years in the last 10 years (see map and list of SY03-04 violence).  Learn how to tell if you have an Un-Safe School and what schools can do to become a Safe School.  Here are some helpful hints to recognize the Cycle of Violence and how to stop it.  Remember:  School violence doesn't "just happen."  It often follows a pattern:

  • Two People or groups have a conflict: over a girlfriend, boyfriend, clothes, etc
  • They trade insults or threats: angry words, looks or gestures
  • Tension builds: each person may become angry and others may egg it on.
  • They may fight: especially if they believe that no one can "back down".
  • One of them may seek revenge:  creating a new cycle of violence and revenge.
