10/31/02 Tulsa, OK—Details
remain sketchy as the investigation continues into the shooting of a Tulsa
high school student by a Security Guard. Early indications are that an armed
Security Guard was attempting to shoot another student who may have had a
weapon; however, he missed his intended target and accidentally shot another
student across the street. The bullet apparently struck that student’s
mobile phone sending fragments into his face but not penetrating his body.
This incident has caused several agencies to look into the school’s
practice of contracting with a private firm to furnish armed Security
Guards, the policies in place for use of deadly force, and the level of
training specific to schools that is provided.
This shooting follows closely after a student shot his fellow student in
New Jersey and a university student in Arizona shot and killed three
professors before taking his own life.

UPDATE
Tulsa Police are recommending that no charges be filed
against the Security Guard involved in the this incident. The Tulsa School
District is reviewing its policy on training required of the Pinkerton
Guards who provide security services for their campuses.
In an unrelated incident another Tulsa student was shot,
stabbed 15 times and had his thumb cut off during the evening hours of
October 31, 2002. A 19 and a 20 year old are in custody.
