January 21- 22,   2004  - England, AR
Sponsored by: England  - Supt. Paula Henderson
Training Location: England School District - England, AR

CRISIS ACTION TRAINING & WORKSHOP
Do you have a crisis plan or have you exercised your crisis plan lately?
This training draws on a wealth of national research and years of professional experience to develop a "Template" for schools to follow in developing a Crisis Response/Action Plan tailored to their specific needs and situation. The Template and the Crisis Plans produced by it have been reviewed by state officials and meet the requirements established by regulation. The most effective way to using this Template is as part of a Crisis Action Training and Workshop that involves the staff at Keys facilitating a meeting of community stakeholders on the first day to determine the needs of the First Responders. The Template is used by the Keys staff to guide the community leaders (the first day), and the schools Crisis Team (the second day), through the steps of developing and publishing a fully functional Plan.

Sponsored by:

Training Location: 16940 B Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92647   MAP

CERTIFICATION TRAINING:
ASSESSMENT OF THE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS STUDENT

Targeted Participants:
Counselors, Crisis Team members, Principals & Asst., Behavioral Teachers, Nurses, Disciplinarians, SRO's, Risk Assessment Team members

This is the most essential training available to schools and youth workers today. With the ever increasing frequency of school shootings, it is time that we do something about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why" we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and "How" to provide help for them.  There is an emphasis on identification and assessment of early and imminent warning signs in troubled youth. This training provides schools a component of the Risk Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and information, this training will produce Certification for using the Keys To Safe Schools.com Assessment Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification of Early Warning Signs.

* Bullying Stops when Respect Begins

School students have reported an increase in bullying with severe consequences to themselves and their schools. As if this were not enough, bullying has been identified in a national study as a factor in the recent school shootings. At Columbine a group of school athletes bullied the two boys who later became shooters. Almost any group in anyone's school could be the "bullies" and and it would be accurate at some point in time. Bullying can be physical, emotional or social. Keys' Bullying Program offers four modules to fully address the different aspects of this complex issue.

Staff Training

One day Facilitator Training

This training is based on National Research and a must training for those that work with children, adolescents and young adults. It is a "practical" training that teaches how to recognize anger, manage anger and de-escalate volatile situations in the classroom. It trains the Facilitator three levels of controlling anger and that is to first control themselves, then control the situation, and finally to control the student. This training introduces Huan Ju, The Art of Redirection. It provides physical and non-physical means to stop or break up a fight with minimal risk to all involved. The techniques taught protect the dignity of the combatants, which minimizes the probability of retaliation or recurrence.  The unique character of this system is that it is NOT pain inducing, it maintains dignity, it is geared toward students in school rather than adults in residential settings - unlike other trainings methods.

What can a School do to Prepare or Respond?

"There is nothing you can do. Trust the government to warn and protect us. If they use germs or chemicals all we can do is find burial sites for the victims." These are the standard statements made by school officials and parents. But there are positive steps that can be taken without great amounts of money spent or complicated planning. Come and hear how you can protect your own school.
